Immersive Installation for Public Art Display
Washington, DC

Obscura received an artist grant from the DC Arts and Humanities Commission to design an immersive installation that showcases and elevates public art from the District of Columbia. The DC Public Art Program provides high quality art installations and administrative support services for the public so they can benefit from an enhanced visual environment. Obscura created a multichannel projected curved display, where guests can drive the projections from an interactive multi-touch screen. Through this immersive experience, visitors are educated on each individual art installation and background information on each artist. This installation opened at the (e)merge Art Fair and then was installed in the DCCAH's office as a semi-permanent display.

Real-Time Projection Mapping and Sound Generation:
Double Take is an exploration of the doubling of perception. The extreme precision of the robots movement allows a rigorous examination of the act of perceiving, space, sound and movement in an immersive environment. Double Take maps a virtual cinematic world onto the physical space of the robot lab and casts the robots as light houses, revealing this superimposed reality. A projector mounted to the robot arm sweeps through the space illuminating this virtual world. By morphing and distorting the virtual environment Double Take expands the perception of the space by mapping alternate geometries and multiple environments onto the “real” space of the robot lab. A robots’ eye view live feed video provides a further doubling of or perception within the robots sphere of action.
The sound scape uses the movement of the robots as input for a interactive score. A Real Time data flow from the positions of the robots joints, generates sound according to the relationship between them. Sound frequencies increase as the robots become closer to each other, and the modulation varies depending on the speed of the robot.

Holley Farmer, Principal Dancer in the Merce Cunningham Dance Company joined Devyn Weiser’s RoCoCo seminar to discuss techniques at the intersection of movement, space, and technology. Work with Cunningham spans a decade in which this master of modern dance explored the potential of motion capture, simulation, and algorithmic computation as a medium for moving in space. With an eye toward the SCI-Arc Robotics & Simulation Lab, Ms. Farmer discussed Cunningham’s choreographic techniques, chance operations, and collaborations with technology.
In conjunction with Holley Farmer’s lecture Chris Skeens, Curime Batliner, Brandon Kruysman, Ana Herruzo Pierce, and Jonathan Proto staged an original multi-robot installation. The robotic movement involved synchronization of ‘parts’ and sought to develop both asynchronous as well as synchronous behaviors in one choreographic system. For example, only the sixth joint of Robot[3] was synchronized with the incremental movements of Robot[4] and Robot[5], while the movement of the body was moving asynchronously.

The project takes into account the design of not only a physical space, but a digital one, both interconnected and working as one, where users can participate, manipulate, and transform it physically and virtually. The implementation of a “site specific” sonic and visual installation, located in the Northern part of the SCIARC building results in the creation of a ‘real- virtual' environment. It is an immersive Architectural space that is transformed by the users and also interacts with them. The aim is to encourage human gathering and playfulness within the space: A space with a certain "intelligence".
The history of the space is made transparent by the use of 3D Projection Mappings, and agents that follow the users, and leave traces.
Sound recordings of human conversations, or foot steps directly change the appearance of the space and multiple sound channels allow 3D sound spatialization. The Sum of all the interactions will also create an evolution of the behavior of the installation and of its appearance.

State 1: Ambient state
The space has life of its own, the sound is traveling trough the space at a certain pace, and animations are running randomly
State 2: User entering space
The first animation is triggered, allows the user to recognize the space, as it is projection mapped to itself.
State 3: User experimenting the space
As the user walks in the space, his movements activate the particle system, that react and follow him.
The sound will follow the user throughout the space as well.
State 4: Spatial Transformation
After the user has experienced the space for a certain amount of time, the space will transform its appearance to different scenarios, transporting the user to an other place

Programming of the 3D Sound traveling and 3D Projection Mapping:
Max/Msp/Jitter
Cosm
Maxuino (Arduino)
Devices:
Kinect camera: User Motion Tracking
2 Proximity Sensors :User counter
Motu Sound Card : 6 Sound Channels
4 Sound Monitors

Nowadays, some architectural sceneries are being forced to respond to problems for which they weren't originally designed for. Society changes at an accelerated rate, complexes that were designed barely 30 years ago, have now suddenly become obsolete. One example is the role of the airport at present. Airports have become great employment providers and have turned into business activity zones, as well as logistic and distribution centers. This has all happened without a clear planning frame. Airports have stopped being mere “factories of aerial transport ” .They are now being accompanied by a spectacular growth, and are tending to develop “airport-cities” in their surroundings as well as turning into intermodal nodes of transports at the metropolitan or regional ranges. In my final project of studies in the School of Architecture of Madrid, (2008-2009) with the professor Izaskun Chinchilla as my advisor, I have initially tackled the problem of the transformation of airports into airport-cities, developing an analysis through the Dallas/Fort Worth airport, USA. After studying this airport (third largest in the world in means of operations) I have tried to provide solutions to the present needs of its passengers. The current passengers, flows, airport activities, and operations conducted differ drastically from those taken into account when this airport was designed in 1974. I consider the study and the design of new architectonic typologies necessary to provide answers to these new situations, typical of a present day airport. In this way in my final studies project, I propose the design of new kinds of waiting or delay spaces, and I also propose the design of architectural prototypes for the new business complexes, creating these new spaces from the process of hybridism of both office and housing typologies.

The project begins with an investigation of public space and the introduction of new media technologies on a urban scale, attempting engage architectural design, where real daily life activities will happen within the space.
My main focus has been to find new ways in which users can participate in the decision making of the design, and have some level of control, responsibility and management of their space.
We must question the ways that users to engage, transform and build public space. This rarely happens in real space, but often occurs in the digital world. Online communities provide a wide range of networks and platforms to participate, give opinions, resulting in structures built integrally by the users of the space.
Such is the influence of the Internet. The Egyptian revolution could not have taken place without the Internet. It is the first REVOLUTION of the Informational Age. With an immediate switch from Cyberspace to Urban Space.
Castells in his book ‘The Rise of the Network Society’, talks about how this Network society is a result of a Revolution in communication technologies, and gives birth to a new system of horizontal communication networks, cultural transformation, as virtuality becomes an essential dimension of our reality.
Returning to the LADWP area and its user space engagement, I propose the design not only of a physical space, but a digital one, both interconnected and working as one, where users can participate, give their opinions, and actuate in both levels, the physical and the virtual.
I will use Castells words to define these two platforms, SPACE OF FLOWS AND SPACE OF PLACES.

This ‘real-virtual’ urban tissue is proposed for the DWP workers, and customers, taking advantage of this semi-pri- vate-public space. The physical structure first conquers the parking space of the DWP, and starts spreading into the city.<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2011-07-20 at 1.19.20 AM.png" width="640" height="429" width_o="1253" height_o="840" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2011-07-20 at 1.19.20 AM_o.png" data-mid="8627842" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2011-07-20 at 1.16.53 AM.png" width="640" height="361" width_o="1537" height_o="866" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2011-07-20 at 1.16.53 AM_o.png" data-mid="8627804" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2011-07-20 at 1.19.37 AM.png" width="640" height="422" width_o="727" height_o="479" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2011-07-20 at 1.19.37 AM_o.png" data-mid="8627844" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2011-07-20 at 1.20.06 AM.png" width="640" height="418" width_o="1287" height_o="840" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2011-07-20 at 1.20.06 AM_o.png" data-mid="8627845" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2012-01-13 at 5.29.21 PM_640.png" width="640" height="452" width_o="1286" height_o="909" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/132085/1753933/Screen shot 2012-01-13 at 5.29.21 PM_o.png" data-mid="13161726" border="0" align="left"/>

This visual and sonic installation uses a real time data flow translating each of the Staubli industrial robots’ 6 joints position in space into an immersive experience. The synchronization of robotic movement is materialized through the sonic overlay, where speed, acceleration and rotation of the robots change one’s spatial perception within the robotic lab.

Motion Control:
All robotic movements are choreographed within Autodesk’s Maya software. A custom plugin, dubbed Esperant.O is written by Brandon Kruysman and allows for export of joint angles in order to control Staubli 6 axis robotic arms. This plug-in provides us the ability to control multiple robot arms within the same work cell. The joint angles are also simultaneously fed into a patch within MAX/MSP where sound frequencies are generated. A total of 18 frequencies (3 robots with 6 joints each) are overlaid to create the sonification of robotic movement. The sound sequence is then synchronized with the robots in space and the viewer can experience the translation in space of 6 axis robot arms visually and audibly.
Tools: Esperanto plug-in, Maya, Max/Msp

DOCUMENTING VIDEO:

In the demonstration we can see a Maya animation sending the data real-time via Udp protocol to Max/msp. Sound frequencies are assigned to the position data, creating a soundtrack.

The initial installation setup, consisted of REAL TIME data flow, where each one of the robots 6 joints’ position in space, generated a sound sequence. An input sensor would detect human presence and send a message to the robot with a position instruction. The result is the sonification of the robot movements in space, representing its interaction with human bodies.
The translation of spatial paths into sound allows a different perception of space. Each one of the joint rotations can be heard over the sound piece, as well as the speed and the acceleration of the robot trajectory. When a body approaches, the robot quickly reacts, and is represented by a fast increment or decrement of sound frequencies.
We see the project as a starting point for further research within SCI-Arc’s robotic lab, as a tool for understanding and working with collaborative robotic scenarios. The translation of space activity within the lab such as human trajectories or material output into forms of communication offer a new control model for us as designers to tap into a typically closed loop workflow.
